Guatemala Adventure covers the same backbone of the country in seven days, colonial Antigua, the Kaqchikel highlands, Lake Atitlán and the Chichicastenango market, with one day set aside for the mountain: the guided hike up the Pacaya volcano.
Pacaya is one of Guatemala’s most active volcanoes and also its most accessible. The trail climbs through mountain forest before opening onto wide fields of hardened lava left by recent eruptions; from the top you see the neighboring volcanoes and, on clear days, the Pacific coast. The effort is moderate: about three hours of steady walking, no previous experience required.
The rest of the route is unchanged. Antigua Guatemala and the coffee culture of its slopes, Iximché, the former capital of the Kaqchikel kingdom, the Tz’utujil villages of Lake Atitlán with their backstrap looms and artisanal cacao, and the closing day in Chichicastenango, between the copal smoke of the Santo Tomás church and the color-painted cemetery.
A local coordinator, assigned once your booking is confirmed, holds the inter-region transfers and the encounters with each host in the network. Lodging and meals are left to your choice, so you can shape the trip your way. If you would rather have a Day 3 without climbs, the same route exists as Essential Guatemala (the Antigua lookouts); if you want the bigger challenge, as Guatemala Expedition (the Acatenango expedition).
