The climb to Acatenango is one of the most iconic in Central America. At nearly 3,976 meters above sea level, it's a physical challenge rewarded with one of the most spectacular views on the continent: the active Volcán de Fuego, whose eruptions can be seen up close from the camps set on the flanks of Acatenango.
But this is far more than a climb. It's an encounter with nature at its purest — walking through pine forests and mountain vegetation, watching the sun set over a chain of volcanoes, and feeling the summit transform in the last light of day.
As night falls, the real spectacle begins: sleeping beneath a star-filled sky, with the glow of Volcán de Fuego lighting up the horizon, and waking the next morning to a landscape you'll never forget.

We leave Antigua Guatemala for the community of La Soledad, the starting point of the climb.

Check-in, gear and backpack review, safety briefing and meeting your guide before starting the climb at around 2,400 meters.

The trail winds through pine forests, mountain vegetation and highland farmland, at a pace set for the group with rest stops along the way.

A break to recover energy before pressing on; timing is approximate.

Arrival at base camp
With a privileged view of Volcán de Fuego, there's time to rest, acclimatize to the altitude and take photos.

The sun slips behind the mountains and the show begins as Volcán de Fuego lights up the horizon; volcanic activity can't be guaranteed.

Dinner and overnight at camp
We share the evening with fellow travelers under a starry sky, with distant community lights and nighttime volcanic activity if conditions allow.
